The Hawaii Exemplary State Foundation

In the face of escalating social ecological challenges driven by climate change impacts in the Hawaiian Islands, the "Exemplary State Initiative" envisions a statewide effort in which K-12 schools in their respective ahupua'a communities participate in place-based STEM collaborations in which teachers, students, Hawaiian cultural experts, researchers, engineers, technologists and resource managers are engaged in research activities that will contribute to Hawaii's scientific knowledge base about the current state of biodiversity, climate and environmental human health. Through these STEM collaborations, communities will be empowered in a participatory process to deal directly with issues relevant to their ahupua'a including disaster management, flood mitigation, natural resource management, pollution, infectious disease, etc.
