Bacterial Sampling

Human waste is a serious threat to water quality because it contains many types of pathogens, or disease-causing organisms (e.g. bacteria and viruses). Bacteria, such as E. coli and Enterococcus, are examples such pathogens. Activities, e.g. fishing and swimming, in water bodies polluted with human feces can cause diarrhea and eye, ear, skin and respiratory infections, as well as more serious problems such as hepatitits and meningitis (US EPA 2006). However, fecal indicating originate from non-point sources (fish and birds, etc.) may not correlate with human health risk. Regardless, monitoring water bodies for pathogens is an important component environmental health and human safety. For the purposes of this study, we will be using the IDEXX Colilert-18 and Enterolert test kits to determine quantities of the bacteria present in water samples taken from the Ala Wai Estuary sample sites (see map). After performing the procedure, input your results into the database and the time you sampled. The most probable number (MPN) of bacteria in your sample may also be associated with YSI (chemical) and Climatic Data collected that day. Is there any relationship between them? You can download any content in the database by clicking on the orange CSV button at the bottom of the page.
